Focus on the moment

The trick to forgetting the big picture is to look at everything close up.
One of the biggest problems I´ve had to face, and most likely you aswell, is being able to ¨live in the moment¨.
In a world surrounded by anxiety and stress, is hard to focus on what’s happening right now.
Unfortunately, this fuels our mind to wander in the search of the why, the meaning behind it all. .
We’re always trying to figure out what things mean - why things are the way they are. As though the why matters.
Overthinking limits our ability to react, which further diminishes our chances of success.
Though is a curse us humans have to deal with, unlike other animals.
For any other specie, things are just the way they are.
For us, we’re natural story tellers, and we will not rest until we find a story for it.
We love believing everything happens for a reason, and all that energy spent on figuring out the way could definitely be better used on actually dealing with it.
We cannot spend the day in explanation.
We must remember that the implications of our obstacles are merely theoretical.
They exist in the past and in the future, though we live in the present moment and the more we understand that, the easier it’ll be to overcome it.
Here’s a great example of people who have been able to overcome the pressure of focusing on the meaning of things, and instead focusing on what really matters, their company.
This are a couple of companies that started during depressions or economic crisis:
FedEx
UPS
Walt Disney Company
Hewlett-Packard
Charles Schwab
Standard Oil
Costco
Revlon
General Motors
Proctor & Gamble
United Airlines
Microsoft
LinkedIn
And if that isn’t enough, half of the Fortune 500 companies started suring similar economic situations.
Our understanding of the business world primes storytelling and mythology as if that would affect the outcome.
We’re naturally inclined to creating a story about everything, but when it comes to business, it’s just the way the are.
No drama, no fluff, only events.
We must focus on the moments, not the monsters that may or may not be ahead.
And ir you still find it hard to ground yourself in the present, try some of this activities:
Strenuous exercise
Unplugging
A walk in the park
Meditation
Getting a dog
And remember, it’s not simply a matter of saying you will live in the present, but actually working on it.
Everytime you catch yourself ruminating, immediately ground yourself in the present.
An excelent way to do this is what I call the 5 senses exercise were:
You try to identify 5 different things with your five senses.
For example, find 5 colors, 5 sounds, 5 textures, etc.
It doesn’t matter if you find the 5 of them, as long as you try.
It may seem hard at first, but remember, we’re aiming for a habit, not immediate results.
